Acid attack woman jailed for attempted murder of partner as he slept

Acid attack woman jailed for attempted murder of partner as he slept

A woman who attempted to kill her partner by pouring sulphuric acid on him as he slept has been jailed for life.
Daniel Rotariu lost his sight and was badly burned and disfigured when he was attacked by 52-year-old Katie Leong in July last year at the house they shared in Turner Road, Leicester.
Mr Rotariu, 31, and Leong were in a relationship at the time of the attack, when she poured acid at 96% concentration onto the victim for six seconds.
Leong and her former boyfriend, Mark Cummings, were both accused of attempted murder with Mr Cummings cleared by the jury at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday.
The court heard Mr Cummings, 46, had ordered the acid online - but that the attack was "driven and orchestrated" by Leong who was found guilty of attempted murder and will serve at least 17 years.
Angela Clark, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "The evidence revealed a picture of her fascination with attacking someone using acid, including her possession of a book written by an acid attack survivor.
"We had scientific evidence that she was present when the acid was used, including traces of the acid on her clothing.
"The evidence of forensic medical experts confirmed that the acid was poured for about six seconds, and that a smaller dose of acid could have been fatal.
"All this evidence clearly showed that she had planned and implemented the attack fully intending to kill, so she was prosecuted for attempted murder."
Ms Clark added the attack had a "devastating effect on the victim", who is still undergoing treatment for his injuries.
She said: "In order to avoid being blamed for the attack, Leong attempted to incriminate Mark Cummings, who wanted more than anything to resume their relationship.
"However, our case was that she was the driving force behind the attack and the jury decided that Mark Cummings was acting under her controlling influence, so was not guilty of attempted murder."
Detective Chief Inspector Rich Ward, who led the investigation, said: "The attack on Daniel was utterly wicked and it is quite astonishing that he survived.
"It is hard to adequately describe the horror and brutality of what was done to him. It is equally hard to accept the chilling lack of concern for him since then.
"Leong has not shown any remorse - let alone humanity - for what she did to Daniel.
"Daniel, however, is a quite remarkable man. The strength and resilience he has shown, both in his fight for life in hospital, and in his ability to give evidence in this trial, is truly humbling."

Rio Ferdinand 'turned to drink' after wife's death

Rio Ferdinand 'turned to drink' after wife's death

ormer England captain Rio Ferdinand has said he turned to alcohol following the death of his wife, getting up in the middle of the night to drink.
Ferdinand's wife Rebecca, the mother of their three children, died in 2015 aged 34 after a battle with breast cancer.
The ex-Manchester United defender said: "At the beginning I was drinking a lot at night time.

"We have a lady lucky enough who lives with us, she would go to bed and I'd come back down in the middle of the night and probably drink a lot for the first three or four months.
"But I would get up and do the school run and stuff."
Ferdinand, who discusses the death of his wife as part of a new documentary exploring the impact on parents who lose their partners, said since his own loss he can sympathise with people who go to "dark places".
He said he leaned on the people around him and kept moving forwards for his children, but that he understands how it can affect those who may not have the same support.
"That's why a network of people around you is so important," he said.
"And I was fortunate to have that and also having my kids as inspiration to make sure I get up and do things and try and make things work.
"Some people aren't afforded that, some people haven't got that, and that's when I started to become a bit more sympathetic when people do go to places that are dark places.
"I used to look at people or read stories and think, how can you be so selfish and commit suicide or attempt to commit suicide or whatever.
"But I can actually sympathise now because I understand that you get to places where you think, if I didn't have that network of people or my kids who I use as an inspiration to be able to get up and think straight, I can understand that."
Ferdinand, 38, said tasks like the school run were particularly tough after Rebecca died.
He said: "The first time they went back to school, which was probably about three or four days later, I woke up in the morning and I was scrambling around the house.
"They were late - it's the first time they've ever been late for school because I was having a panic attack in the house. I'm having to go into a room on my own and sit there and go, 'What happens now?'
"And then I've got one of them in the car going, 'Mum wouldn't do this.'
"You just don't know what to do really."
Ferdinand's 60-minute BBC documentary will see the star try to understand how widowed parents manage grief and support their children.
- Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum And Dad airs on BBC1 on Tuesday, March 28.

Punch thrown at Crystal Palace's eagle mascot Kayla, court told

Punch thrown at Crystal Palace's eagle mascot Kayla, court told

rystal Palace's American bald eagle football mascot faced a punch by a rival fan, a court has heardc.
Kayla, a 25-year-old bird of prey, was targeted by a Charlton Athletic supporter when violence broke out during a Capital One third-round tie at Selhurst Park on September 23 2015, Croydon Crown Court was told.
Charlton fan Daniel Boylett, 36, of Eltham, south east London, denies attempted criminal damage in the alleged attack on Kayla.

Boylett appeared in the dock alongside Colin Kitto, 49, of Eltham, Andy McConville, 48, of Rochester, Kent, Billy Cowcher, 32, of Greenwich, south east London and Sam Donegan, 25, of Welling, Bexley, in south London, who have been charged with the football violence.
Kayla's handler Chris Belsey had been walking her around the pitch on his forearm when a punch was thrown from the crowd, the jury heard.
Prosecutor Daniel Higgins said: "As he passed the stand he noticed three or four fans were shouting abuse and one of these three or four lent over the barrier and threw a punch directed at Kayla.
"Mr Belsey is unsure if the punch directed at the eagle had landed.
"He pulled Kayla away slightly to keep her from any further attack and then walked away."
Mr Higgins said Kayla "seemed unhurt" but added "due to her delicate bone structure if she had been hit with force, her bones could easily break".
He said there "is no dispute" Boylett threw the punch but questions may surround whether he intended worse to happen.
Boylett, Kitto and McConville each deny two counts of violent disorder.
Cowcher and Donegan each also deny a charge of violent disorder.
The derby game, which Charlton lost 4-1, had turned ugly before a ball had even been kicked.
Mr Higgins told the jury there "was disorder at the match before, during and after" the game.
The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow at 10am.
